Moulting Season Survival Guide: Keeping Pet Hair Under Control, Room by Room
Twice a year, many dogs and cats swap their coats: a heavy shed in spring as the winter undercoat comes out, and another in autumn as the summer coat makes way for a thicker one. Indoor pets living with central heating and artificial light often shed a bit all year round too. You can't stop moulting, but with a simple routine you can stop it taking over your home. Here's the plan, room by room.
1. Start with the pet
The single most effective thing you can do is catch the hair before it lands on your furniture.
- Brush more often during moulting season. Daily for double-coated breeds (Labradors, Huskies, German Shepherds, long-haired cats); a few times a week for short coats.
- Use the right brush for the coat. An undercoat rake or deshedding tool for thick double coats, a slicker brush for medium coats, a rubber grooming mitt for short, smooth coats. Your groomer or vet can recommend one for your pet.
- Brush outside or on a hard floor you can sweep, never on the sofa.
- Keep it positive: short sessions, treats, and stop before your pet gets fed up.
2. Living room
- Cover their favourite spot with a washable throw. Much easier to clean one blanket than a whole sofa.
- Do a 30-second daily sweep of the sofa with a pet hair mitt: short back-and-forth strokes, then a quick shimmy to roll the hair up into a strip you can pick off.
- Vacuum the clumps and hard floors every couple of days while the shed is at its peak.

3. Bedroom
- If your pet sleeps on the bed, put a throw on top of the duvet and wash it weekly.
- De-fur bedding before it goes in the wash: shake it outside, sweep with a mitt, and if you have a tumble dryer, give it 10 minutes on no or low heat to loosen the rest.
- Keep the wardrobe closed so shedding doesn't end up on clean clothes.
4. The car
- Use a seat cover or boot liner during moulting season and wash it regularly.
- Brush your dog before car journeys where you can.
- Keep a mitt in the door pocket for a quick sweep after each trip.

5. Your clothes
- Get dressed after the morning cuddles, not before.
- Keep a lint roller or mitt by the door for a final check on the way out.
- Remove hair before washing, or the machine just spreads it around the load.

Help from the inside: diet and health
A healthy coat starts with a complete, balanced diet and fresh water. If you're thinking about supplements (such as omega-3s for coat condition), talk to your vet first rather than guessing.
When shedding isn't just moulting
Normal moulting is even, all over, and the skin underneath looks healthy. Speak to your vet if you notice:
- Bald patches or thinning in one area
- Red, flaky, scabby or sore skin
- Lots of scratching, licking or chewing
- Sudden heavy shedding outside the usual seasons
- Any other changes such as weight loss, lethargy or a change in appetite
These can be signs of fleas, allergies, skin infections or other health problems that need proper treatment.
FAQ
When is moulting season for dogs and cats in the UK?
Most heavy shedding happens in spring, as winter coats come out, and in autumn, as pets grow a thicker coat for winter. Indoor pets may shed more steadily all year.
How long does moulting last?
It varies by breed and coat type, but a seasonal shed typically lasts a few weeks. Regular brushing helps get the loose coat out faster.
Can I stop my dog or cat from shedding?
No. Shedding is natural and healthy. But regular brushing, a good diet and a simple cleaning routine keep it under control.
